Ever wondered what causes acne?  Well, every part of our body has hair.  These follicles produce oil called sebum.  Sebum is a healthy kind of chemical, generally speaking.  But once it enters the skin via the pores on our bodies, and once these pores close because of accumulation of dirt and other substances, sebum becomes the breeding ground for bacteria, and bacteria can cause inflammations we know as pimples, zits and acne.

Since acne is caused by bacteria, many products have been invented to cure the problem by attacking its source.  Acne gels, for example, aim to get rid of these microscopic creatures that have taken refuge on the sebum underneath our skin that cannot find proper drainage.

There are 2 kinds of acne gel: bactericidal and antibiotic.

Bactericidal acne gel aims to kill the bacteria upon contact.   This kind of acne gel is like a pesticide, designed to target and eliminate bacteria types that are known to reside on trapped sebum.  The popular over-the-counter acne remedy, benzoyl peroxide, belong to this category.

Antibiotic acne gel, on the other hand, has the same effect, but like other antibiotics, it targets every single harmful bacteria in the body.  Medical experts always warn against the usage of antibiotics because they don’t your body to become immune to its effects, as antibiotic may be necessary for graver and more life-threatening needs in the future.

So which acne gel is better?

For mild cases of acne, bactericidal acne gel should be used.  For dire cases of the skin disease, occasional application of topical antibiotics would be a more appropriate choice.
