pop a zit

Whenever a pimple emerges and begins to inflame, one question always arises in the victim’s mind: to pop or not to pop that zit?

The common urge is, of course, to pop that zit.  It’s unsightly.  It causes discomfort.  It can even cause some pain.  And it always looks threatening as one can’t help but feel that the pimple will invite even more pimples that can lead to a total acne attack. But if you pop that zit, you’ll be risking your skin against these potential dangers:

- Infection.  Your hands can be dirty.  The needle can be dirty.  Dirt may be pushed inside the skin when you apply force against the zit.  These can cause further infection.  There are occasions when infections are so grave that zits actually become boils.

- Permanent scars.  If zits aren’t popped properly, they become wounds, and wounds can leave behind lasting scars.

- More zits.  If sebum isn’t drained immediately, it may be absorbed by other pores and if these pores close down, acne-producing bacteria may find a new home.

There is a correct way to pop that zit.

1. Clean your hands and the area around the zit THOROUGHLY.
2. Apply hot compress, or any warm object, on the area around the zit.  This will soften the skin.
3. Pop that zit with a clean needed or Q-tip.
4. Squeeze out the sebum.  This is critical.  You must squeeze out the sebum OUTWARDS, and never inwards.  You want the sebum to go out of the skin, not further into the same.  Make sure the zit is drained free of sebum.
5. Clean the popped zit with alcohol or other cleansing agent.
