Collagen injections are also used as a treatment for acne scars. Collagen is a naturally used protein by the body to heal wounds. It is injected beneath scarred tissue to plump it up to normal skin levels. However, collagen injections are temporary and general only last 3-6 months.
Autologous fat transfer is a treatment for acne scars that removes fat from the patient and injects it much like collagen under the skin. This procedure will need to be done several times, as it can take up to 18 months for the fat sample to be fully accepted by the skin.
Finally, as a more extreme treatment for acne scars, skin grafting is used. A layer of skin from the thigh is removed, and grafted on to the scarred area carefully. This method is for very severe scarring only. As you can see, treatment for acne scars run the gamut of procedures. You need to talk to your dermatologist to decide what is the best treatment course for your situation.
